Week 12 News and Notes
News:
Two teams hold a tentative grasp on first place after twelve weeks while no less than six teams trailing them by a single game. With a mere two weeks remaining in our regular season, the forks have officially been stuck in the play-off aspirations of our friends in the bottom four. I’m pretty sure we’ve all been here at one time or another and when you are, the best thing is to play the spoiler to someone else’s aspirations. After that, it’s the dreaded kiss your sister bowl (aka toilet bowl).
On the NFL side of things there were some coaching changes and a bunch of others have to be on the hot seat as well. We also had some QBs turn back into pumpkins in a very definitive fashion. Actually a couple looked more like the jack-o-lanterns I still see rotting on a few people’s front steps.
After an exciting honeymoon in Minny, people are now calling Josh Dobbs “Disastronaut” and “Astro-not”. That did get ugly fast and if it continues, I have to wonder if Jefferson’s hamstrings are going to suddenly tighten up again. On a related note, I am also left asking Will the real Justin Fields please stand up? We’ve seen two very different sides of this guy and I don’t know what the future holds but I think Neil and Doug must have seen this coming because both were trying pretty hard to pawn these guys off on me at the deadline.
Shark Move of the Week:
It’s nice to have options at RB and AOB did this week but among the best choices was the return of Kyren Williams. There is a tendency to take a wait and see approach with a returning player in the first week back (especially when that player isn’t a proven stud) but doing that would have left a lot of points on the table. Nicely done Andy!
Guppy Move of the Week:
Some honourable mentions this week. To Matt Stafford and the Rams’ offense who managed 4 TD passes and less than points combined for Kupp and Puka. The Bills who scored 4 TDs of their own and still managed to lose. The clear winner the week had to be that Bears – Vikings game though. Am I the only one who thinks it’s completely unacceptable to have a game that bad on Monday night football? Atrocious.
Welcome to Fantasy Football Hell Award of the Week:
It’s maybe been a bit more miserable than usual this year for busts, injuries and what I would call “turnover” at the top of the fantasy heap. There will always be changes from year to year when you look at the top 10 RBs or WRs but some players get into that list and stick around for a few years at least. This seems to be a year of upheaval and transition though, with quite a few familiar names dropping out and quite a few new names taking their places. There’s a saying in fantasy and real sports – better to get out a year too soon than a year too late – and some of us have definitely hung on a year too long with a few of these guys and we’re paying the price.
Other than those high profile, first round injuries like Jefferson and Kupp though, I think the first couple rounds of our draft have actually held up not too badly. When you get into Round 3 though, it starts to get hellish. Jones, Metcalf, Higgins and Mixon have all been pretty big disappointments for various reasons and that’s helping to make some of our seasons pretty disappointing as well. Still, the tears and post season analysis will have to wait. We have two weeks left to decide the combatants for the coveted Plastic Helmet of Excellence and then three weeks to crown a new champ. Let’s get ’er done!
