Week 5 News and Notes

News:

There’s a lot going on so pardon me if I have trouble recalling if Robert Saleh was fired this week or last week. The NFL operates seven days a week so there’s a lot of bleed between weeks anyway. Apparently Kareem Hunt is not dead yet nor are a few teams like the Bengals and Falcons that appeared in trouble.

We saw a few strong scores in Clan McDonald this week, powered by an unusually high number of forty-burgers – Chase, Burrow, Jackson and Cousins all put up 40s and we has a decent batch in the 30s as well. In the standings, the Brown Dawgs are now leading by a wet nose over Ceilidh, Grid and Archie.

Random Thought of the Week:

I don’t mind taking a controversial opinion on something when I can but this Jets situation is just a shit show. You have a defensive-leaning head coach whose DEF is in the top 2 in the league, statistically speaking. Then you have the same team with a bottom six offense. Then you have Aaron Rodgers who is a bottom quartile performer right now fresh off a three INT performance. The OC is his guy from Green Bay but he flamed out in GB and the Jets look like they’re running a high school offense right now.

Rumour has it Salah wanted to fire Hackett, Rodgers was having none of that and if true, we now know who is in charge there. This might work out okay if Rodgers is 30 instead of 40 and is still an above average QB but he’s neither of those things now. Remind me of all the “player / coach” situations that worked out great…

Shark Move of the Week:

Grid successfully navigated the running back by committee see-saw battle that is most NFL backfields by picking up and starting Tank Bigsby. Dropping him was a guppy move on my part and that’s the short answer. The longer answer is, while they were really happy with him coming out of camp, he was not exactly killing it out of the gate. Add in how bad he was last year and then find yourself in a roster crunch and that’s how guys get dropped. I don’t think we’ve heard the last of ETN but it’s going to be awfully hard to predict who has “the game” any given week.

Honourable mention to Piper who stood resolute with Caleb Williams and Aiyuk, who were enough for him to get off the schneid.

Guppy Move of the Week:

To borrow BigPlay’s phrase, I’ll play a little “security guard” this week by pointing out I thought it was a bit ironic Neilly was calling out Jay while he was getting outscored by him. Just like the funny shaped ball bounces funny, Jay just happened to be playing one of the three teams he wouldn’t have beaten this week. What can you say? How can you explain that? you can’t. It’s just how the head-to head format goes.

I think I mentioned last week Jay leads the league in points against. That honour continues this week, with the next closest manager now being 50 points behind. The average points per week he is facing actually managed to go up from last week to almost 147. A flawed premise I know but I’d be 1-4 against that “baseline” score.

Smacktalk Award of the Week:

In keeping with the adage a picture is worth a thousand words, I’m unable to think of a sufficient comeback to offset a picture of a guy standing on a beach with a drink in his hand. I’m not saying it settles every argument but it is very similar to the time Patrick Roy said he couldn’t hear what Jeremy Roenick said because he had his Stanley Cup rings in his ears.

When that pic came through, I was thinking about changing the furnace filter before I turn it on – that or making an appointment to get the snow tires on.

Welcome to Fantasy Hell Award of the Week:

It’s the low hanging fruit but Nico Collins goes from league-leading fantasy receiver to the IR. You don’t replace that production but cliche or not, you have to replace the player – next man up!

In Game of Thrones they said “Winter is coming”. In fantasy it’s bye weeks and we have some doozies this year. Have a look at your weeks 12 and 14 if you haven’t.
