Week 6 News and Notes
News:
Week 6 was a bit of a strange brew with scores ranging from the 70s to the 180s. Three squads improved to 5-1 and Jay continued his streak of getting the high score of the week dropped on him to remain a perfect 0-6.
In NFL news, we had another cluster of concussions and hamstrings as well as the leg injury to Aidan Hutchinson. Lots of Qs, Ds and Os out there.
Random Thought of the Week:
Defensive scoring. I’ve never been happy with it. I don’t like the way our defenses start with 15 points and then go up (or usually down) from there. No other position does that so why should defenses? Our current settings reward teams for giving up fewer points and making big plays but there’s no factoring in yards allowed or other categories that we associate with good defense.
I stumbled onto an alternate scoring system I’d like to talk about for next year:
| Category | Modified Scoring | Current Scoring |
| Defensive TD | 6 | 6 |
| Kick/Punt Return TD | 8 | 6 |
| Interception | 3 | 2 |
| Fumble Recovery | 2 | 2 |
| Sack | 1 | 1 |
| Tackle For Loss | 0.5 | N/A |
| 4th Down Stop | 1 | N/A |
| Three and Outs Forced | 0.5 | N/A |
| Safety | 4 | 2 |
| Blocked Kick | 3 | 2 |
| 0 points allowed | 0 | 15 |
| 1-6 points allowed | 0 | 10 |
| 7-13 points allowed | -1 | 5 |
| 14-20 points allowed | -2 | 2 |
| 21-27 points allowed | -3 | 0 |
| 28-34 points allowed | -4 | -2 |
| 35+ points allowed | -5 | -5 |
| 0-99 total yards allowed | 0 | N/A |
| 100-199 total yards allowed | 0 | N/A |
| 200-299 total yards allowed | 0 | N/A |
| 300-399 total yards allowed | -2 | N/A |
| 400-499 total yards allowed | -3 | N/A |
| 500+ total yards allowed | -5 | N/A |
The benefits are:
- Alter DEF to score points like other positions (starting at zero and trending positive throughout a game)
- Rewarding defenses for real achievements that are often overlooked
Shark Move of the Week:
Honourable mention goes to Brian for starting KaVontae (yes, I had to look that up) Turpin. In a brutal offensive effort by the Cowboys, this guy managed to score 24.40 points, mainly on kick return duties.
Grid stuck by Najee (didn’t have to look that up) Harris for a cool 23.20 points and Ken cashed in on the Rachaad White injury with Bucky “The buck stops here” Irving to the tune of 22.90 points.
I’m not going to overthink it though, with a new high water mark for the season set by Archie (aka Golden Boy) with 184.20 points. That’s going to get it done most weeks…
Guppy Move of the Week:
I couldn’t really come up with too much here this week. I’m not sure that’s a testament to our collective greatness so much as the bleak prospects we’re facing when looking at our depleted rosters.
Smack Talk award of the Week:
I’m not against going into victory formation a little early in the league chat but I’m never not going to call it out when it’s wrong (yes Neil, I’m looking at you). In this case it didn’t even end up being all that close.
I think my confused moment of the week was when Piper spelled flaccid with one C, then suggested Neilly spelled it with two CCs, even though that is correct. I feel like I might have missed something?
In any event, I’m going to give the award to Grid for working a Thanksgiving reference into the Mortley comeback chirp on Breece Hall.
Welcome to Fantasy Hell Award of the Week:
Despite the fact Jay is rapidly closing in on 1000 points scored against this year (now averaging over 152 points / game), I still have to give the award to Andy for the all out bludgeoning his team is taking about the head and shoulders. He got a zero from Marvin Gardens, had Sermon with a shoulder injury and that’s on top of the six players on his bench unavailable due to byes or injuries. It might be time to call some guys up from the practice squad Andy!
